Terrifying stats about texting and driving

Even a seemingly minor motor vehicle collision can have devastating results. When an accident is caused by a distracted driver, however, the impact can be more severe.

When a driver is not focused on the road, they might drift into oncoming traffic causing a head-on collision. Additionally, they might fail to recognize stopped traffic, colliding full-force with the stationary vehicles in front of them. These examples of violent impact can result in brain damage, paralysis or death. One of the most devastating distractions is texting while driving - and the supporting statistics might shock you.

A recent Huffington Post piece collected various staggering statistics centered on the dangers of distracted driving. There are several worth repeating.

  • The CDC reports that nine Americans are killed every day due to a distracted driving accident.
  • A similar CDC study reported that 33 percent of U.S. drivers admitted to reading or writing a text message while driving in the month prior to the survey. The age group of those surveyed? Eighteen to 64 years old.
  • The National Safety Council reported that nearly 350,000 motor vehicle crashes in 2013 involved texting.
  • Studies showed that drivers could safely look away from the road for two seconds at a time. Drivers who were reading or typing a text, on average, took their eyes off the road for five seconds at a time. In five seconds a car traveling at highway speeds will cover the length of a football field.

The majority of states have enacted some form of legislation prohibiting the use of cell phones to text while driving. Unfortunately, accidents continue to occur at an alarming rate. If you were injured or you lost a loved one due to the negligence of another driver, it is wise to seek the counsel of an experienced personal injury lawyer to learn more about your legal options.
