Do you qualify for Supplemental Security Income?

If you are unable to work due to a disability or your child has a disability, you may be eligible for financial support through Social Security. A disability can have a significant financial impact, and the burdens associated with the inability to work or caring for a loved one may become unmanageable.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a program intended to supplement income for certain individuals who are disabled or caring for a disabled child. Even Florida applicants with a valid claim to SSI benefits may find it difficult to get their claims approved, and it is quite beneficial to seek legal support when navigating this process.

Eligibility and the application process

It is important to understand eligibility requirements before applying for SSI benefits. According to the Social Security Administration, an applicant must meet one or more of the following in order to have a valid claim:

  • Must be age 65 or older
  • Must be blind or disabled
  • Must have a blind or disabled child
  • Must have limited income
  • Must complete an application
  • Must be physically or mentally incapable of gainful employment

The SSI claims process will consider many financial factors. Property holdings, income levels and bank accounts are evaluated as part of the claims process. A single individual cannot have resources totaling more than $2,000 and a married couple cannot have resources totaling more than $3,000 in order to be eligible for SSI benefits.

A lawyer can determine if you have a valid claim and can help you gather the necessary documentation to validate your application. It may be of critical importance to your family to get these benefits, and you should have experienced support from the beginning of the application process.

A strong advocate for you and your family

The SSA denies many initial Supplemental Security Income claims, even with supporting documentation and a correctly completed application. It is frustrating, but a denied claim is not the end; you have the right to appeal and fight for the support you and your family deserves.

An experienced lawyer can advocate for your interests, help complete the necessary paperwork and navigate through the appeals process. Getting the benefits you need is a complex, even intimidating, process, but your chances of a successful claim dramatically increase with a knowledgeable legal professional by your side.
