Florida's highways see many fatal motor vehicle accidents

Each year, numerous people lose their lives on Florida's interstates, highways and byways. These fatal motor vehicle accidents not only take the lives of innocent victims, but also often change their families forever. Those responsible for these crashes often face criminal charges, along with civil actions from surviving family members.

It remains to be seen whether the families of three individuals killed in a recent multi-vehicle crash will exercise their rights in its aftermath. The accident took place around mile marker 177 of Interstate 75 on a Sunday morning. Three people died and two suffered injuries.

A semi-truck with a mechanical issue was pulled over on the south side of the interstate. Another vehicle occupied by a driver and two passengers somehow veered onto the shoulder where the truck had parked and then slammed into the rear of the larger vehicle. After the impact, the smaller vehicle came to rest in the inside left lane. A third vehicle failed to stop in time to avoid crashing into it.

The driver and passenger of the second vehicle died at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler also perished in the accident. The identity of the two injured individuals was unclear. Authorities continue to investigate.

The families of the deceased victims and the injured parties retain the right to file civil actions against all of the parties believed to be liable in this crash. The conclusions of the official investigation, along with any independent investigation, could help reveal what parties should be included. If negligence is proved through the appropriate evidence, the victims or their families, as applicable, could receive damages seen in many other Florida motor vehicle accidents.
