Drivers of tractor-trailers have to make sure that they are aware of everything going on around the truck. In some cases, the large size of the rigs make it difficult for them to see certain areas. When the driver isn’t able to see objects that are in certain places, accidents can sometime occur. For one truck driver, failing to see a woman in a motorized wheelchair has ended in a tragedy.

The 49-year-old Florida woman was riding her electric wheelchair in Miramar at around 10:00 p.m., when she was struck by a tractor-trailer. It appears the driver didn’t know he struck the woman when the semi-truck accident occurred. A Miramar police spokeswoman said the driver drug the woman after he hit her. A motorist flagged down the driver because of sparks flying from the truck.

The semi-truck driver was making a turn to go on University Drive close to Miramar Parkway. The police spokeswoman said the driver was distraught. The case is still open, but it appears the incident was just an accident.

Friends and neighbors say they will miss the woman, who was considered a community fixture on the wheelchair. She is being remembered as a sweet person who enjoyed life.

The difficult journey of learning to live without this woman is just starting for her family. The financial strain of her final expenses and other costs might start to weigh heavily on their minds. Family members who have experienced such a loss might have the right to seek compensation. An award in a civil trial won’t bring back someone who died because of another’s recklessness or negligence, but it may help ease the financial strain.
