Each year, far too many Florida families lose loved ones in crashes on the state’s roadways. In some of the motor vehicle accidents that occur, one family could lose multiple members. These types of tragedies are devastating to families and will most likely change their dynamics forever.

One Florida mother is facing this type of tragedy after losing four of her children in a crash. The family was leaving a birthday cookout to head home on Memorial Day. As the mother, nine children and her boyfriend headed off in her 2006 Dodge Durango, the vehicle began to shake, and then there was a booming sound from the rear of the vehicle.

Despite the fact that the woman took her foot off the gas immediately after the boom, it was not enough to keep the vehicle from rolling. Three of the woman’s daughters died at the scene and a fourth died at a hospital in the area. A toddler miraculously survived after being thrown over a barrier wall that was 30 feet high.

The vehicle was purchased around four months prior to the crash. As it turns out, there might have been unresolved recall issues that the mother claims were not disclosed to her at the time of the purchase. Furthermore, the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a tire that separated and could have contributed to the crash. Investigators are also looking into whether the vehicle was overweight with so many occupants.

Regardless, it appears that some structural and mechanical issues could have led to the accident and the death of her four daughters. Many motor vehicle accidents are blamed on drivers, but there are numerous crashes that are the result of mechanical and manufacturing issues. In those cases, as in this one, the victims have the option of filing civil actions against the seller, manufacturer and possibly others depending on the circumstances. Successfully litigating these issues could result in an award of damages.
