Can a drug cause you to engage in dangerous sex, excessive gambling, compulsive shopping or binge eating? Evidence filed in Abilify lawsuits indicates that the drug is connected to these compulsive behaviors and the FDA has made a safety announcement regarding dangerous behaviors associated with Abilify.

Abilify is an anti-psychotic medication typically prescribed in the treatment of psychiatric conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, and others. The drug’s manufacturer Bristol-Myers Squibb currently faces growing numbers of lawsuits claiming that they failed to warn potential consumers of their drug about the risks associated with the product.

An interview from earlier this year shows the sort of hardship people who took the drug experienced.

“Eventually, I was asked to leave my parents’ house because I couldn’t stop gambling,” an anonymous Abilify patient told reporters. She estimated that her gambling habit, which did not exist before she started taking Abilify, cost her as much as $2 million in under a five year period.

Another woman claims that she gained 70 pounds, which she lost after stopping taking the drug, and even engaged in prostitution.

Engaging in dangerous behavior is consistent with claims from others who have experienced the decreased ability to control compulsive behavior and increased desire for those risky behaviors associated with Abilify. The FDA took note of this trend with Abilify users when it made an updated safety announcement last year.

As of May 2016, the FDA made a safety announcement related to Abilify (aripiprazole), saying, “… we have become aware of other compulsive behaviors associated with aripiprazole, such as compulsive eating, shopping, and sexual actions.”

These pathological behaviors can have devastating effects on individuals taking Abilify and their loved ones. Often, the source of these behaviors in individuals taking the drug can seem mysterious. It is crucial to understand the potential connection between this drug and dangerous and damaging compulsive behaviors. Discussing the effects of the drug with a doctor is crucial to ensuring your safety and wellbeing.
