Hurricane Michael Upgraded to Category 5

Post on behalf of Thomas J. Ueberschaer PA on Monday April 22, 2019

Hurricane Michael stands as one of the most devastating hurricanes to ever make landfall in the United States and last Friday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that it would upgrade the storm’s category on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale from 4 to 5. This makes it the fourth storm of such strength ever recorded making landfall in America.

This announcement from NOAA confirms what many local residents have known all along: Michael was one of the most destructive storms imaginable. The storm claimed the lives of 16 and damages are estimated to exceed $25 billion. Residents and local businesses continue working to rebuild despite a national conversation that has all but forgotten them, making this updated categorization of little practical significance to the area.

Scientists have also indicated that atmospheric pressure is a good indicator of the intensity of a storm. NOAA ranks Hurricane Michael as having the third lowest central pressure on record, falling behind only the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Camille of 1969.

“Whether it was a 5 or a 4, it really isn’t relative to anything for most of us who are here. It’s just another number,” Mexico Beach Mayor Al Cathey told the Associated Press.

As we have discussed in a previous post, many of the areas affected by Michael are still working every day to return life to normal. It is common to find roofs using blue tarps to keep the wind and elements from coming inside and streets that lack signs. Gnarled trees and piles of debris still line the roadways six months after the storm made landfall
