Check for Injuries

In the immediate aftermath of an accident, the first priority should be determining whether you or anyone else involved has been injured. Call 9-1-1 and get help immediately, if necessary.

Clear the Road

If no one is injured, move to a safe location. If the vehicle is safe to operate, drive the vehicle out of the flow of traffic. If you cannot move your vehicle, leave the vehicle where it is, turn off the engine, turn on the hazard lights, and move yourself to a safe location.

Contact the Police

Regardless of whether injuries were sustained, contacting the proper authorities is advisable. The police are able to generate an official accident report of the crash. This document is important for recording the details of the accident.

Collect Contact Information

After determining that any injuries have been handled and contacting the authorities, collect the contact information of the other drivers and witnesses involved in the collision. This should include:

  • Full name, phone number, address (for both witnesses and drivers),
  • Insurance company and policy number (for drivers),
  • Driver’s license and license plate number (for drivers),
  • Description of the vehicles involved (for drivers).

Photograph the Accident

Take photos of the accident and surrounding area. You want to document the conditions of the accident and the damage from as many angles as possible. This will help to display and document the damage done and the potential reasons the accident occurred.

Contact your Lawyer

You should get in touch with your lawyer as soon as possible. It’s a good idea to do this before speaking with an insurance company. Your attorney will be able to help guide you through the next steps you should take and protect your rights following a car accident.
