Head injuries are likely after a motorcycle accident

We previously discussed the need for motorcycle riders to wear helmets and eye protection. That last post might have some of our readers wondering why helmet use is so important. The fact is that anyone who is in a motorcycle accident is at risk for serious head injuries if he or she doesn't have a helmet on. Contusions and hematomas are two type of head injuries our Florida readers might like to know about.

A contusion causes the brain tissue to bruise. The injury is considered a traumatic brain injury. It is caused by a sudden blow to the head that is strong enough to damage the brain. A hematoma occurs when there is bleeding around the brain, which is caused by a major blood vessel being damaged.

Anyone who is in a motorcycle accident faces the possibility of hitting his or her head. If you do hit your head and lose consciousness, you should seek medical care. Additionally, you should seek help if you start to vomit or feel sick to your stomach. If you get a headache or feel more drowsy than normal, you should seek help. Those symptoms might not happen right away, so be on the look out for them for a while after the accident.

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in the country. Almost half of the 230,000 people who are hospitalized with TBIs that requires hospitalization were caused by motor vehicle accidents. With that in mind, it is easy to see why it might be necessary to hold the person who caused the motorcycle accident accountable for his or her actions. Filing claims for damages through the court system is one way an injured biker can seek compensation to help cover expenses.
