Changing traffic patterns and motor vehicle accidents

Traffic patterns change all the time. Vehicles can be moving along smoothly on Florida's highways one minute, and the next they come to a dead stop. If drivers fail to remain vigilant and keep with the flow of traffic, motor vehicle accidents could be the result.

For example, Interstate 95 tends to be either moving along smoothly or stop-and-go. On a recent Thursday night at approximately 10:25 p.m., the traffic ahead of a semi truck heading southbound came to a stop. The truck managed to stop, along with the car behind it. Unfortunately, the 18-wheeler that came up behind the car failed to stop.

It slammed into the car and pushed it into a semi truck that was in front of it as it continued to move forward. The second truck ended up hitting the back of the first truck as well. The car became sandwiched between the two semis. Sadly, and not surprisingly, the 24-year-old woman in the car died from the injuries she suffered in the impact. The section of the interstate where the crash took place remained closed until approximately 1 p.m. the following day while troopers and investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol conducted the on-scene investigation and cleaned up the wreckage.

While officials conclude their investigation, the family of the deceased victim could exercise its right to file a wrongful death claim against the truck driver and his employer. If the evidence proves to the court that negligence led to the death of their loved one, the court might consider awarding them damages often seen in other motor vehicle accidents. Any restitution the family may receive could help with the financial burdens that tend to arise after such catastrophes.
