Many motor vehicle accidents happen in early morning on weekends

The weekends are a time for Florida residents to kick back, relax and enjoy time with friends and family. In many cases, people are on the state's roadways in the early morning hours after a night of fun. This means that a potential exists for motor vehicle accidents when people are tired, impaired or otherwise not at their best as they drive.

No one yet knows what factors contributed to a recent accident on Interstate 75 at approximately 3 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol are still investigating the crash that killed two people and injured three others. In fact, the FHP is asking witnesses to come forward with any information that might help in the investigation.

Preliminary reports indicate that one of the deceased was driving the vehicle that struck the back of the other vehicle. That driver was thrown out of his vehicle when it overturned. Troopers suspect that he was struck by passing vehicles after the crash, and he died at the scene. The other victim was a passenger in the car that was struck. The driver of that car and the other two passengers suffered unknown injuries, and their current conditions were not reported.

When the dust settles, the family of the deceased victim and the other injured victims may exercise their right to file civil actions against the estate of the driver who died. The results of the official investigation and any independent investigation could provide evidence that establishes the deceased driver negligently caused or contributed to the injuries and death suffered in this crash. If successful, the court could consider awards of damages similar to those seen in other motor vehicle accidents.
