The effects of alcohol on the human body

Numerous Florida residents drink alcohol. Some do it only socially, others drink to help deal with stress or depression, and others consume alcoholic beverages simply for the pure joy of doing it. It does not matter why one chooses to drink; it only matters what one does after drinking. The effects of alcohol on the human body are great. It is truly unfortunate that many people have been injured or killed in accidents caused by drunk drivers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 28 people die every day in the United States in auto collisions caused by drunk drivers. When you think of the population as a whole, that may not seem like a significant number, but any death caused by an impaired driver is one too many.

How bad is it really?

In the year 2015, there were 111 million incidents of impaired driving that were self-reported. Think about that. That is just the number to which people were willing to admit. Think about all those cases that go unreported. That is a lot of people out there driving while under the influence of alcohol every single day.

Also in 2015, over 10,000 people died in drunk-driving collisions. That makes up for about one-third of all auto-related fatalities. Honestly, it is amazing that it wasn't higher than that.

How does alcohol affect the human body?

The more alcohol a person consumes, the more impairments he or she is likely to suffer. For example, typical effects on the body include:

  • Two drinks: Relaxation, loss of judgment, altered mood and visual function decline
  • Three drinks: Loss of muscle control, poor judgment, reduced coordination, irritability and poor reaction time
  • Four drinks: Impaired judgment and reasoning, speed control, poor muscle control, inability to concentrate and memory loss
  • Five drinks: Significant memory and muscle impairment, slurred speech

These are just a few of the many effects that alcohol can have on the body. There are many others not listed here.

The sad truth

The sad truth about drunk-driving accidents is that they are highly preventable. However, too many people, despite knowing the effects of alcohol on the human body, fail to believe that they are too impaired to drive. Because of this, numerous Florida residents have lost their lives. Thankfully, according to state laws, those who have lost loved ones due to the actions of drunk drivers may have legal recourse.
