Personal injury topics: Amputation

Some accidents result in such catastrophic injuries that Florida medical personnel may have to take extreme measures in order to save a patient's life. One such action may be to amputate a limb. If the accident was the result of another person's negligence, the victim may be able to seek restitution through a personal injury claim for what could be lifelong issues due to the amputation.

If your accident damaged an artery to the point where blood flow to an extremity is dangerously compromised, you may need the limb to be amputated. In the alternative, some portion of the limb may have been crushed beyond repair, and the only way to save the rest of your arm or leg is to amputate the crushed portion. In some cases, a limb, or a portion thereof, is lost in the accident and cannot be reattached.

There are risks associated with an amputation that could make your condition more precarious. You could contract an infection, the skin at the site could tear or the tissue could die. Barring any complications, you will still require physical therapy, and perhaps psychological therapy as well. The healing process could be lengthy both physically and mentally.

During this time, you will probably find that your medical expenses are adding up quickly, and you have missed a significant amount of time from work. These financial losses will not help your mental state as you learn to adjust to your new life. It may help to discuss your situation with a personal injury attorney here in Florida to determine whether filing a claim is a viable option. If so, he or she can help you through the legal process while you focus on your recovery.
