Is Abilify Causing Gambling Addiction?

Abilify-Lawsuit-Bottle.jpg

Abilify (aripiprazole) has been linked to gambling addiction and Abilify lawsuits are being investigated and filed against the manufacturers. Evidence has come to light that indicates that the manufacturer of the drug was aware of the drug's association with gambling addiction for years before updating the warning label in the United States. Now, Abilify lawsuits lawsuits are being filed by the hundreds against the manufacturers.

Typically, Abilify is prescribed in the treatment of schizophrenia, Tourette's disorder, bipolar disorder, and some issues associated with autism. However, other uses of the drug, which are not approved by the FDA, known as "off-label" uses, exist. One of these off-label uses of Abilify is in the treatment of anxiety but other uses have been researched, including: ADHD, dementia, substance abuse, eating disorders, and as a sedative. The use of Abilify in the treatment of some of these issues is inconclusive while apparent risks have raised concerns.

Concern about gambling addiction associated with Abilify has grown due to Abilify's ability to enhance reward responses in the brain. Because of the way that Abilify works, enhancing the brain's natural system for reward, strong chemical associations can form with gaming and gambling addiction. For those affected, these behaviors can quickly increase in seriousness to devastating ends.

Reports indicate that the drug manufacturer new about the risk for years before updating the label. In the United States, drug manufacturers did not update the label for Abilify until 2016 after an Abilify announcement from the FDA. The label had been updated years prior in other parts of the world for these issues. According to the FDA, research from as early as 2002 raised concerns about the association of Abilify with gambling addiction.

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Bristol-Myers Squibb and Otsuka Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturers of Abilify. Our attorneys are now in the process of evaluating Abilify lawsuits related to gambling addiction. Contact our office if you or someone you know, please call us today to learn more.
