Workers' compensation news: 3 dead after gin pole collapse

Someone has to erect, repair and maintain those huge communication towers that dot the Florida landscape. Many of them reach 100 feet tall, and climbing them can be a challenge, not to mention a safety nightmare. Even so, men and women do it every day expecting that their employers will provide them with the safest equipment possible. Unfortunately, accidents can still happen, and when they do, victims and their families may find themselves seeking workers' compensation benefits to cover their financial losses.

This could be the case for the families of three men who recently lost their lives while working on one of the mammoth towers in south Florida. A resident in the area heard what "sounded like a hand grenade" explosion and called 911. When emergency responders arrived, they found three dead men.

All three had been on what is called a gin pole, which is used to climb these towers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration does not yet know why the gin pole collapsed, but has six months to complete its investigation. OSHA did reveal that the company the men worked for, Tower King II, had serious safety violations in the past that were resolved either through the payment of fines or correcting the issues.

Knowing what happened may be of little comfort to the families of the men. They may only be thinking about their losses right now, but at some point, they may need to consider the financial losses associated with the death of their loved ones. They may seek workers' compensation benefits to help with those losses. Dealing with the process can be complex and frustrating, and it may be beneficial to seek advice and assistance in obtaining all of the benefits to which they are entitled.
