Far too many young lives are ended by motor vehicle accidents

Like other parents around the country, those here in Florida do what they can to keep their children safe. Even as they travel on the state's roadways, most are keenly aware that they hold their children's lives in their hands. The problem is that other drivers may not be as careful, and far too many young lives end in motor vehicle accidents.

Recently, a 5-year-old girl sadly succumbed to injuries she suffered in a collision on Florida's Turnpike. It was on a Saturday afternoon at approximately 5 p.m. Preliminary reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that the girl was just one of several occupants of a Jeep Liberty. Three other children and two adults also occupied the vehicle.

At some point in their northbound travels, a big rig began boring down on the vehicle from the right lane. The Jeep's driver attempted evasive action in order to avoid a crash, but to no avail. Her braking caused the Jeep to fishtail, which then sent it flipping across the roadway. During the accident, four of the SUV's occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Emergency medical personnel rushed them to hospitals in the area.

Some suffered minor injuries, but others' injuries were more serious, including those suffered by the little girl. Within six hours of the crash, she died. Along with those who may file personal injury claims in connection with the crash, the family of the little girl may file a civil action (a wrongful death claim) as well. If the court finds that the negligence of one or more parties led to the death and injuries suffered, damages similar to those seen in other motor vehicle accidents may be awarded.
