Motor vehicle accidents involving racing can be deadly

In an otherwise ordinary day, a little adrenalin rush may be just what the doctor ordered -- or is it? Most people would agree that it certainly is not when it comes to driving too fast on city streets. Racing may provide some excitement for a Florida driver, but it can also cause deadly motor vehicle accidents.

Two trucks at a traffic signal appeared to be racing when one of the pickups slammed into two vehicles occupied by unsuspecting victims. Witnesses reported that (at least) the truck that hit the two vehicles was revving its engine before taking off quickly. The two pickup trucks reached speeds estimated to be around 70 mph when the crash occurred.

The first impact threw the victim vehicle into a utility pole. The driver of that vehicle suffered severe injuries and was last reported to be in critical condition. The passenger did not survive his injuries. The occupants of the second vehicle struck by the pickup managed to escape with only minor injuries. Police took the pickup truck driver into custody.

He faces numerous charges in connection with the crash, including racing, vehicular homicide and reckless driving, among others. While the investigation continues (including locating the other vehicle and driver), and the criminal case proceeds, the critically injured driver and family of the deceased passenger may move forward with civil claims in a Florida civil court. If the evidence presented proves that the injuries suffered, both critical and deadly, resulted from the actions of another, the court may award damages allowable by law in motor vehicle accidents.
